This project begins with the fascination felt by reading daily the titles of new scientific articles on artificial intelligence on the Arxiv website. I found strange and beautiful formulas. I gradually understood that this research was about the willingness to teach machines human faculties, and especially to interpret the world. Taking up the thread of a long philosophical tradition, these texts diverted the line to answer instrumental questions, thus passing from understanding to use. From there, the idea germinated in my mind that we could learn something from these formulas describing the functioning of software whose purpose was to mimic us. The learning process is twofold: machines learn from us and we learn from machines. Some fragments of these scientific articles can be read as challenges to human beings in the form of slogans to the contemporary world.
I have given these slogans the form of a unique T-shirt that can be ordered on a website without knowing in advance which slogan will be ours. We will only find out when we receive this T-shirt of which we are the sole owner, thus creating a link between this text and our identity. In this way, we learn our humanity from the goals we pursue in building the artificial intelligence of tomorrow.
Ce projet débute par la fascination ressentie en lisant quotidiennement le titre des nouveaux articles scientifiques sur l’intelligence artificielle sur le site Arxiv. J’y trouvais des formules étranges et belles. J’ai progressivement compris que ces recherches portaient sur la volonté d’apprendre aux machines des facultés humaines, et tout particulièrement d’interpréter le monde. Reprenant le fil d’une longue tradition philosophique, ces textes en détournaient le trait pour répondre à des questions instrumentales, passant ainsi de la compréhension à l’utilisation. A partir de là, a germé dans mon esprit l’idée que nous pourrions apprendre quelque chose des ces formules décrivant le fonctionnement de logiciels ayant pour objectif de nous mimer. L’apprentissage se dédouble : les machines nous apprennent et nous apprenons des machines. Certains fragments de ces articles scientifiques peuvent alors être lu comme des défis lancés aux êtres humains en prenant la forme de slogans lancés au monde contemporain.
J’ai donné à ces slogans la forme de tee-shirt unique que l’on peut commander sur un site Internet sans savoir à l’avance quel slogan sera le nôtre. On ne le découvrira qu’en recevant ce teeshirt dont on est le seul propriétaire, créant ainsi un lien entre ce texte et notre identité. Nous apprenons ainsi notre humanité des objectifs que l’on poursuit en construisant l’intelligence artificielle de demain.
