After the Dataset

L’espèce humaine a disparu. Il ne reste, pour porter notre mémoire, qu’une station en orbite : un centre d’art qui conserve un dataset du monde tel qu’il fut, et un système qui en génère continûment le contrefactuel. Ce dernier témoin ne conserve pas passivement nos traces: il les réactive, les recombine, produit sans fin des expositions qui n’ont jamais eu lieu. Notre vie s’est arrêtée, pas cette mémoire.

L’archive cesse ici d’être un dépôt mort. Elle ne conserve plus une origine dans l’espoir de son retour : elle devient réserve de possibles, mémoire anticipative, promesse indéfiniment différée de ce qui aurait pu être. Conservation qui invente.

Reste la question que l’œuvre laisse ouverte, et qu’elle n’est peut-être pas seule à poser : à qui s’adresse un musée qui organise des vernissages pour un public absent, produit des catalogues pour des lecteurs disparus, commente indéfiniment des collections que personne ne verra ? La fiction met en orbite une situation qui, ici-bas, ne demandait qu’à être vue.

The human species is gone. All that remains to carry our memory is a station in orbit: an art centre holding a dataset of the world as it was, and a system that continuously generates its counterfactual. This last witness does not passively preserve our traces — it reactivates them, recombines them, endlessly produces exhibitions that never took place. Our life has stopped; this memory has not.

Here the archive ceases to be a dead deposit. It no longer keeps an origin in the hope of its return: it becomes a reserve of possibles, an anticipatory memory, the indefinitely deferred promise of what might have been. Conservation that invents.

What remains is the question the work leaves open, and which it may not be alone in asking: who is a museum addressing when it holds private views for an absent public, produces catalogues for vanished readers, and endlessly comments on collections no one will ever see? The fiction puts into orbit a situation that, down here, was only waiting to be seen.
