A tree is painted on the walls of AlUla’s old town. From wall to wall, its strokes seem repetitive, inscribing this popular tradition in strict repetition. By providing an AI with this motif, the software created an infinite number of similar patterns, using tradition to generate resemblance.

This pattern was then cut from aluminum and superimposed on an unpatterned palm weave. This weaving, another AlUla tradition, was produced at the Madrasat Addeera school.

The superimposition of the two suggests a new relationship with tradition, no longer seen as identical repetition, but as the starting point for historical plasticity, respecting a resemblance to the past while introducing new possibilities.

A book on the project have been published.

Il existe un motif peint sur les murs de la vieille ville d’AlUla représentant un arbre. De mur en mur, ses traits semblent répétitifs et inscrire cette tradition populaire dans une stricte répétition. En fournissant à une IA ce motif, le logiciel a créé une infinité de motifs ressemblants, utilisant la tradition pour générer une ressemblance.

Ce motif a été ensuite coupé dans de l’aluminium et superposé à un tissage de palmier sans motif. Ce tissage, autre tradition d’AlUla, a été réalisé au sein de l’école Madrasat Addeera.

La superposition des deux propose une nouvelle relation à la tradition qui n’est plus considérée comme une répétition identique mais comme le point de départ d’une plasticité historique, permettant de respecter une ressemblance avec le passé tout en introduisant de nouvelles possibilités.

Un livre sur le projet a été publié.
