Cette œuvre s’inscrit dans une recherche au long cours de l’artiste autour du film “Vertigo” (1958) d’Alfred Hitchcock. Pour cette itération, Chatonsky a utilisé le script original du film pour alimenter Stable Diffusion, un système d’intelligence artificielle capable de générer des images à partir de descriptions textuelles.

Le résultat est une réinterprétation visuelle qui oscille entre fidélité et dérive par rapport à la source, produisant une version alternative du film emblématique. Les images générées capturent une atmosphère qui évoque la Californie de la fin des années 1950, tout en intégrant les approximations et réinterprétations propres à l’algorithme.

Ce travail fait écho aux thématiques centrales de “Vertigo” – la mémoire, le double, la réplique et la hantise – en les transposant dans le contexte technologique contemporain. L’utilisation de l’IA comme médium de recréation prolonge la réflexion hitchcockienne sur la construction des identités et la fragilité du souvenir.

À travers cette génération automatisée, l’œuvre nous invite à revisiter notre histoire visuelle collective et à questionner la constitution cinématographique de notre imaginaire, révélant comment les technologies actuelles reconfigurent notre rapport aux images du passé.

This work is part of the artist’s long-term research into Alfred Hitchcock’s film Vertigo (1958). For this iteration, Chatonsky used the original film script to feed Stable Diffusion, an artificial intelligence system capable of generating images from textual descriptions.

The result is a visual reinterpretation that oscillates between fidelity and deviation from the source, producing an alternative version of the iconic film. The generated images capture an atmosphere reminiscent of late 1950s California, while incorporating the approximations and reinterpretations inherent in the algorithm.

This work echoes the central themes of “Vertigo”—memory, doubles, replicas, and haunting—by transposing them into the contemporary technological context. The use of AI as a medium of recreation extends Hitchcock’s reflection on the construction of identities and the fragility of memory.

Through this automated generation, the work invites us to revisit our collective visual history and question the cinematic constitution of our imagination, revealing how current technologies are reconfiguring our relationship with images from the past.
