L’artiste s’est appuyé sur une collection de minéraux qu’il a minutieusement numérisés pour créer des modèles tridimensionnels. À partir de ces données, il a généré des pierres artificielles qui présentent une particularité troublante : elles sont dotées de la propriété de chiralité, un phénomène que l’on observe couramment dans le monde vivant.

La chiralité, terme issu du grec “kheir” signifiant “main”, désigne la caractéristique d’un objet qui ne peut pas être superposé à son image dans un miroir, à l’instar de nos mains droite et gauche. Dans cette œuvre, les pierres se répondent en miroir, créant des paires indissociables. Cette symétrie particulière brouille leur nature minérale et leur confère une qualité presque organique. Ainsi, bien qu’issues du monde inanimé, ces sculptures évoquent de manière troublante des organismes vivants, faisant vaciller la frontière entre le minéral et le biologique.

The artist drew on a collection of minerals that he meticulously digitized to create three-dimensional models. From this data, he has generated artificial stones with a troubling peculiarity: they are endowed with the property of chirality, a phenomenon commonly observed in the living world.

Chirality, a term derived from the Greek “kheir” meaning “hand”, designates the characteristic of an object that cannot be superimposed on its image in a mirror, like our right and left hands. In this work, the stones mirror each other, creating inseparable pairs. This particular symmetry blurs their mineral nature, giving them an almost organic quality. Thus, despite their inanimate origins, these sculptures are disturbingly reminiscent of living organisms, blurring the boundary between the mineral and the biological.

This perceptual disturbance opens up the possibility of mirror organisms (https://chatonsky.net/chiralite-chirality/), a biology that would undo the organization of living things.
