Breathing machines

The installation is divided into two separate spaces. In the first room, air conditioners produce intense cold as well as various peripheral phenomena: noise, liquid, etc.. We pass an automatic double door that isolates the two rooms. In the second room, we see the other part of the air conditioners that produce heat. The atmosphere becomes suffocating.
The contrast between heat and cold makes sensitive the ambivalent dimension of the air conditioner which is at the same time a remedy and a poison, and which can therefore be considered as a pharmacon.

This installation highlights the thermodynamics of air conditioners, but also a form of climate feedback loop: machines allow cooling a space that is heated. This loop, which feeds itself, is not only technical but also existential: a forward flight that accentuates the threat to bring short-term comfort. Air conditioners are an artificialization and externalization of human breathing, inhalation and exhalation.

“The breathing of the machines” is an absurd installation since the experience between the two spaces is cancelled.
