In the Fog of the Digital – Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art, Berlin
Dans ma conférence Dans le brouillard de l’espace latent, je vous invite à explorer une mutation de notre mémoire collective et de nos structures de pensée. Mon point de départ est une histoire de deuil : celle de Roman Mazurenko, dont les messages textuels ont été digérés par un réseau de neurones pour créer un double artificiel, transformant presque immédiatement un chagrin intime en produit commercial.
À partir de cette scène, je propose une traversée d’environ une heure, jalonnée par la projection de mes propres créations vidéo. Ensemble, nous interrogerons ce que j’appelle l’« espace latent ». Loin d’être une simple innovation technique, il représente une nouvelle époque de la mémoire. Ici, les souvenirs ne sont plus inscrits sur un support fixe ; ils sont dissous et mis en suspension dans une géométrie statistique à des milliers de dimensions.
Pour éclairer ce brouillard, nous ferons dialoguer l’art et la philosophie. Nous verrons avec Kant comment l’IA externalise notre « imagination transcendantale », devenant une boîte noire qui exécute des synthèses à notre place. Avec Cassirer, nous comprendrons que les formes symboliques de notre culture ne sont plus seulement juxtaposées, mais désormais « câblées » en circuit fermé.
Face au « formalisme zombie » et à l’opacité économique des plateformes qui lissent nos imaginaires pour mieux les monétiser, quel est mon rôle d’artiste? Je soutiens qu’aujourd’hui, on ne signe plus une image : on signe un branchement. Signer un branchement, c’est ouvrir la boîte noire, rendre le circuit technique visible, et réinjecter de la friction là où le marché veut imposer une fausse magie. Je vous invite à apprendre à tomber dans ce brouillard pour tenter, ensemble, d’y découper un sens.
In my lecture In the Fog of the Latent Space, I invite you to explore a profound mutation of our collective memory and our structures of thought. My starting point is a story of mourning: that of Roman Mazurenko, whose text messages were digested by a neural network to create an artificial double, almost immediately transforming an intimate grief into a commercial product.
From this scene, I propose a journey of about an hour, punctuated by the screening of my own video works. Together, we will question what I call the “latent space.” Far from being a mere technical innovation, it represents a new epoch of memory. Here, memories are no longer inscribed on a fixed medium; they are dissolved and suspended within a statistical geometry of thousands of dimensions.
To shed light on this fog, we will bring art and philosophy into dialogue. Through Kant, we will see how AI externalizes our “transcendental imagination,” becoming a black box that executes syntheses in our place. Through Cassirer, we will understand that the symbolic forms of our culture are no longer simply juxtaposed, but are now “wired” into a closed circuit.
Faced with “zombie formalism” and the economic opacity of platforms that smooth out our imaginaires to better monetize them, what is my role as an artist? I argue that today, we no longer sign an image: we sign a connection. To sign a connection is to open the black box, to make the technical circuit visible, and to reinject friction where the market wants to impose a false magic. I invite you to learn how to fall into this fog so that together, we can try to carve out a sense of meaning.
