Artificial imagination: after postmodernism?

At first sight, it might seem that artificial imagination is the consecration of postmodernism. Indeed, statistical induction composes an image from millions of images and could therefore be considered as an immense quotation of “everything” that has gone before. If it is necessary to relativize this totality insofar as the dataset is never total, it does not prevent that each image contains many others.

It is precisely this synthesis that we must return to in order to see that the quotation does not operate here by extraction and selection, as in classical culture, but by automation of compositionality. Previously, a quotation was extracted because of the will of an individual or a group of individuals. By such a voluntary selection, one defined a culture to be transmitted and one discriminated between the memorable and the forgettable. Today, one will not find in the images of the artificial imagination a piece of a past image, but thousands of synthesized images, so that it is like an atmosphere (vibes) that one feels rather than one can locate such or such element. This synthesis does refer to past culture, but not by fragment, not by collage, it is another form of compositionality which is inductive, statistical and automated. The choice is not operated by a human being. One could believe that the choice is made by the datatset which is not neutral. This is a recurrent argument. But the constitution of a dataset answers itself to an automation and to a human work which is applied on such a mass of documents that the work becomes mechanical and so to speak unconscious. It is a question of treating the greatest number. It is not so much a question of choosing as of filling in to reach a critical mass of documents, making it possible to put them into statistics. One refers well to the past culture, but in an indistinct way, intertwined, tangled, not recognizable, in the manner of a diffuse Stimmung, one does not manage any more to find the trace of the fragment of origin, one can simply feel a floating and global reference, so to say formless.

This is not a new stage of postmodernism, but a continuation and intensification that changes the nature of the procedures of extraction, synthesis, the method of production and the aesthetic result for the viewers in the case of images. These last ones have access to an atmosphere of time rather than to constitutive quotations of a cultural selection that we must now define. Because an artificial image will be able to make reference to a particular time, by the text (prompt) which provokes it, which generates it but one will never be sure of the images which it uses to be produced, one will not have certainty on their historical membership. This uncertainty on the provenance and the nature of the images, since finally in the latent space there are no more images, but statistics defining proximities, produces a new historical feeling that crosses the times in a non chronological way. If the extraction of quotations made us feel all the stages, we dive now in a history without epoch, without chronology. History itself becomes a latent space where everything coexists according to a structure close to the OOOO (object-oriented ontology). The latent space is a flattening of all things by a double translation: the first one is the digitization in binary coding allowing the compatibility of all the data between them, the second one is the setting in statistics which defines the relations between these objects. This historical feeling is not the nostalgia of this or that past era, but a confusion between these eras, a confusion that crosses time to the present, to the future. Everything happens as if this latent space made us see history from the point of view of an absent observer. Let’s go one step further, this historical Stimmung makes us see the past from the point of view of an extinct species offering itself a monument to what it was. The latent space of statistical induction is the tomb at the heart of the infrastructural pyramids that we will leave on Earth.

The notion of postmodernism is therefore not adapted to the case that concerns us, because the artificial imagination produces a grand narrative. It is a great narrative which is a great flattening and which is without us, at least which places us in this (impossible) position of our own disappearance and thus in the loss of all proper, of all self-apparopriation and return to oneself. The artificial imagination recites our disappearance and makes of the resembling repetition of our memory an artifice. The resurrection is an artificial second time, not the return of the same, but the return of a difference that has always been at work anthropologically. We repeat by technical devices that are artifices. Let us repeat it, for 30 years, the Web has been a utopian enterprise of recording all our existential traces in such proportions that they have become inaccessible to us, we have been thus expropriated from our memory. This massive recording has blurred the division, founding of historical culture, between the anonymous and the singular, the memorable and the forgettable. It is this data that today feeds the artificial imagination as if the network stage had been the prolegomena to statistical induction. The data are no longer documents that could be brought to the surface, extracted and quoted in a new document, in a compilation, but are the object of an automatic metabolization serving as food to constitute a latent space of indifference: this one produces a generalized air of resemblance signing the victory of the artifice and of the resemblance that loses its origin. The disrealism allows to name this atmosphere that comes to affect our different experiences of the realism, its conditions of production and reception, that put in circuit the data with the differential repetition of the statistics.

What happens to the quotation, this fragment so important from a cultural point of view insofar as its selection allows to form a history, a community, a transmission, in the context of this new realism? We can propose that the prompt, this instruction given to a software in order to produce an image, is a form of hyperstitional citation. Indeed, this small text is written by a human being not only with regard to the result he wishes to obtain but also because he has himself integrated in his own cultural latent space a whole history. There is a statistical latent space in computers, just as there is a cultural latent space in each of us. The prompt thus is indeed instrumental but does not start from nothing, its starting point is the metabolization of an indefinite cultural whole. I write this text to produce an image because I know, or I suppose, that the words I write exist in one way or another in the latent machine space. The point of meeting between these two quite different latent spaces is carried out by tra(ns)duction, unfaithful by definition, between the texts and the images. One cannot estimate that the prompt is the free will of a human agent giving instruction to the machines. This text is itself determined by a cultural anteriority. Therefore it constitutes a quotation of the same nature as the produced image which itself is a quotation of other images not by extraction and collage but by statistical compositionality. In this sense the prompt is a quotation produced by a metabolization of the past that realizes a possibility to come (an image that is not yet) and corresponds, in a different way and all in analogy, to the operation that is at work in an automatic and inductive latent space. It would thus be a question of studying the prompt as a quotation of a new type designating new historical and cultural modalities.
