The kitsch of self-referential recursion

We see more and more often a scheme applied to theoretical knowledge, whose parallel history is known in the artistic field, consisting in applying a subject to itself. Thus, we talk about the end of the world in cinema and we consider that the end of a film, when it gets dark, is the end of the world itself. It is a recursive loop whose figure seems to be able to be applied and declined to almost everything, so much it is indifferent to its object.

This indifference seems to me to be the mark of a certain kitsch or of a recipe that gives the appearance of depth and that is, in my eyes, only a pre-reflexive way of posing the reflection, that is to say the fact that everything is “like” doubled.

I was talking about the artistic field, and I would like to make this detour to clarify the consequences of this scheme in theory: self-referentiality has been thematized by Greenberg as an emancipation of the work of art going from its mimetic representation to its self-referentiality conceived as the proper truth of the medium. The painter (abstract expressionist) had to free himself from the submission to realism in order to let himself be absorbed by the truth of the medium. Thus, it was a question of painting the painting, of representing the representation itself, and so on. Cybernetics also deployed a singular form of recursivity that produced an atmosphere conducive to its application to various fields.

In the theoretical field, recursive self-referentiality constitutes the “end” of reasoning, at the point where one discovers that the subject is the subject of the subject. This doubled centrality gives the effect of a truth, the accomplishment of the presence to itself. In this domain, as in so many others, it would be necessary to analyze the affectivity of thought and what it gives itself by inscribing certain words and developing certain schemes.

This self-referential recursivity finds in the methods in research-creation a privileged field of development because the method is precisely a path that announces itself before being traveled and that must guarantee, in advance, its tracing. Thus the method used often takes the shape of the envisaged object, this shape taken as mold would be the guarantee of an identity to oneself, of a correspondence of what one thinks and of the way that one has to think it.

However, this return to oneself does not allow to thematize an original crack, as an irreparable separation between the subject and the object, and to approach the imbalance of the reflexivity which is not identity to oneself, but difference, in the repetition, to “oneself”. The question of apriori in Kant, and in particular the transcendental imagination left fallow after the first edition of the CRP, seems to me to be conducive to a less systematic recursivity, whose foundation is not identity to oneself, but which operates from an original collapse.

This kitsch is also that of the self who gives himself to think to himself in the transparency of a supposed identity.
