The criticism of the capitalism seems to be taken for granted and is generalized by crossing the political field. Many accuse this socio-economic system of being responsible for the injustices and the exploitations, of the unprecedented crisis in which we are entangled and where it is our very survival that is at stake.
Whether we call it capitalism, neo-liberalism, vectorism, etc., it is often the financialization of the economy that seems to constitute the main danger, swirling around itself like a spiral flow. By this we mean an autotelic and self-referential construction of the economy. It is as if the economic sign were freed from its material referent and lost all logic. One distinguishes between a “true economy”, a simple account of physical quantities, and a “false economy” representing nothing but itself and taking itself as the object and end of its process, of which derivatives and crypto-speculation would be one of the completed forms. We thus separate the good realistic representation from the bad idealist representation. This would allow us to explain a runaway of the machine that would become suicidal: the accumulation of capital could well lead to the disappearance of life on Earth.
It will not be a question of discussing this point of view, which is largely simplified here, but of seeing its formal structure: a structure that takes itself for its own object and that has become as if mad, almost independent of human beings (and when we designate the human beings who would be responsible for it, they themselves appear as inhuman). However, we can bring this frightening structure closer to another one, well known in modernity and which also consists in a movement of autonomy: freedom considered as the capacity of agents to self-determine in order to escape alienation considered as the bad influence of an exteriority on an interiority.
The objective of the individual as well as of the collectives would be to free themselves from constraints and to take themselves as their end. In the Dialectic of the reason, Horkeimer and Adorno analyze with sharpness the contradictions of this process of emancipation which turns against itself by the reification where the subjects become objects and are chosified.
One of the forms of the autotelic emancipation was the artistic theory of Clement Greenberg where the work of art must free itself from the bourgeois representation to go towards the abstraction as radical expression of the capacities of the medium.
In the current debates, one often reproaches to the art to participate in the financialization of the world, in this ontological exchange of the “false currency”, because of a market itself largely financialized: the mass media seem to delight in the ridiculous prices out of proportion of certain works, while the globalization of the fairs appears like the symptom of a cultural decadence. On the right as on the left, contemporary art would be responsible for having sold its soul to the devil, that is to say to speculators, financiers, bankers, etc.
This criticism of contemporary art leads to a call 1/ to a pure and simple withdrawal of the artists, 2/ to a commitment in the social struggles and 3/ to certain self-referential recipes. It is this last form that I would like to treat and if I use the notion of recipe it is to immediately show its normative and linguistic facility.
What is it about? Faced with a determined problem, whatever its content, the artist will propose to invent a self-referential structure turning against and on itself, implementing the criticized processes and turning them simultaneously into ridicule. Thus, one can imagine an artist questioning the NFTs by imagining a work fragmented into X shares where the first buyer has all the value, where the second has half and the first half, and so on until a complete decrease of the value. The more buyers there are, the less value there is. This is only one example, but it allows us to understand the recursive recipe of many artists: to turn the structure inside out, and it must be admitted that this logic allows us to treat almost any subject. One can imagine making polluting cultures to deal with the anthropocene for example.
This recipe must be situated in the historical context of the valorization of the reflexivity. The artist would be the one able to make visible what is not visible, to make reflexive what is mechanical or simply reflexive. It is his pastoral role that should reveal the truth to human beings.
The denunciation of finance is particularly adapted to this method, because it shares the same performative structure inspired by the philosophy of language of the last century. We discover that language, enunciation, and nomination themselves produce effects. Just as there is no true economy, no sign designating without resting its referent, there is no criticism that does not participate in the denounced structures.
What produces this critical and reflexive art? Without unifying singular practices, we can underline that these works are often interested by the art itself and put in abyss the milieu of the art, its criteria, its economy, its games of power, etc. By there, they address the question of the art of the future. By this, they address mainly the people working in this environment, offering them the desired extra soul and humor. The institutional criticism comes from the institution itself and is perfectly adapted to it because it speaks about it, it places it in front of a mirror and magnifies it. These works are also often aesthetically neutral and grey. The form does not matter, it is a form by default that could say everything, drawing up the image of a universe where everything is equal in the ridiculous, where the most gray, the most common is what it is necessary to show to, undoubtedly, give to oneself another place, a place of the outside, higher. The aesthetic neutralization is fundamental here, because to have a style, a signature, an imaginary would amount to an artistic naivety. One would have been taken in the game whereas it is necessary to neutralize it, to put it in blank to criticize.
The fact that these critical works use the same structures and the same logic as the financial sign is rarely questioned. Moreover, one can also question more generally the role of the criticism and on the fact that it does not cease to put in scene the power that it claims to contest because it in reaction with regard to him. In this sense, it draws all its power from the object that it criticizes and that it imitates. This mimicry of the critical work on its object makes it another spiral structure.
One could well estimate then that there is some humor in making the same structures spin. But doesn’t this produce the feeling of an absence of alternative. Doesn’t the denunciation of the meaningless sign of finance forget that this meaninglessness is also that of the work and that the ambiguity is stronger and deeper than one might think?
For we must return to this obvious criticism of capitalism. What do we name by that? Isn’t its critique in the artistic field the staging and the constitutive representation of its power? When an artist tackles such a subject and makes it his life’s work, is there not a fascination? Doesn’t he thus represent this power and isn’t he, in a certain way, at its service?
My hypothesis is that the performative self-referentialities of finance and of the critical work of art participate in the same world and are accomplices of each other. Perhaps they belong to the same logic of which finance and critical art are only expressions. The power that interrupts this logic is not the criticism, but the imagination because this one makes happen in what is, what is not (yet) and so it does not react simply to the existing order, it proposes to replace this order by the non-existence of the order, that is to say the contingency as production of possible sense.
