Brouillon-machine / Draft-machine

They probably dream of an autonomous machine, a machine that would be able to create on its own, without any interference. This autonomy is the absolute. Strange western understanding of freedom as absolute, that is, as unbounded and solitary: without influence and without disturbance, without a world, freedom is collected in its own dream.

The machine appears perhaps as the last territory in which this utopia could be realized, the black box of consciousness and technique. A world where causality would be controlled, which would be like a world within a world, secret and cut off from everything else.

They dream of this autonomous machine because they probably dreamed, or at least they remember it as a past era, of the autonomy of the artist. To free oneself from the constraint of bourgeois mimetic representation and its realism was to let the medium, the shapeless matter, speak for itself and free it, there again, from all causality. Form and matter.

Freedom, therefore, as the first causality that would be caused by none other than itself. This required absolute separation. Seeking to realize in artificial intelligence this artistic dream of autonomy and imagined modernity. To suppose that an artist, the model of the machine, must be a creator in the theological sense, a first cause. Freedom as creative autonomy of causality.

We could have been spinozists and thought that freedom is the understanding of necessity.

I’m in front of my computer. I’m not in control, not just an experience of fragility. Of course I decide, but I am also decided. The programming language is not neutral, it fixes in advance a horizon of possibilities. It is not just a means to an end that I would have decided.

It is a question of actively taking this influence into account in the work of writing and coding. There is not first the autonomous human and then the heteronomous machine. There is not first of all anthropological freedom and technological submission, because the very experience of freedom as the construction of a subject will always have been linked to that of a material inscription which is by definition technical: writing.

I feed the software with data. You might think that I have built up this stock and that it is subject to my will, that I can therefore introduce biases into it. But I make do with what I have on hand, what is available. I deal with the datasets that are already constituted or that can be constituted. The collection of data has a preliminary ground that fixes a part of what is feasible. This ground is so complex and sedimented, it is massive data accumulated on the Web, the spirit of a time, of a multitude, the inscription of the existences of each and everyone. A dataset is already the trace of a world, inextricable.

The software learns, I dose the noise, the recursions, the layers. I have read articles on Arxiv, I take back pieces of code, I copy, I paste, I divert and transform, I make mistakes. There is no origin to the code, because the community working on it is technically networked itself. Who started what? Its will is not alone, it is influenced by an infrastructure that is buried in geology, by a logic produced by all and surpassing each one.

The images appear, little by little, they become clearer as they emerge from the noise and move towards simple repetition. It is necessary to find the fragile point of balance between the two in order to reach a resemblance without referent, a realism without reality. The joy is not to produce what one has planned, but by good fortune, chance, contingency, to be surprised by what one has done, a partial surprise that balances expectation and astonishment, because one is not the only one to have done it. We are a multitude to have coded, we are also an infrastructure, a logistics that is the true foundation of all logic.

There is this very particular emotion of deep learning, a mixture of discovery and anticipation: we were expecting something like “that”, but it’s not “that” and it’s something more than we expected.

It’s not over yet.

The machine produces a draft that I’m reworking. She’s an inspiration, one I’ve nurtured. It opens up new possibilities. She is me without me. Surprise to have caused this to defy expectation. I try to follow the rhythm of the software, I adapt to its tempo. I rewrite pages and pages of draft-machine, I rework thousands of images. I have to do it. I have given myself this task: I have bound myself to be rendered to my finiteness as a technological device.

What is a draft machine? The encounter between an individual, a registered multitude, a language and a horizon of understanding. Sometimes the machine draft is completed by the machine, by passing from one software to another one completes, for example, a fragment of text with a paragraph. Regardless, it can be me.

It always spreads a bit more this way.

One will not distinguish between what has been done by a human agent or a technical agent. One will try precisely to blur this boundary so that the relationship between the two is exhibited as such. We will not say what has been coded and what has been copied and pasted. We will make the instrumentality unusable so as not to be subjected to the instrumental and anthropological conception of the technique. Following Michaud’s words, we will de-simplify the technique. To suspend the instrumental and useful character of the technique is what perhaps characterizes the work of the artist.

There is this very particular vibration which is undoubtedly the exact opposite of the ideology of autonomy and the absolute. The autonomization of creation by neural networks is a thought inherited from a misunderstood history of art far removed from the recursive experience whose drift I try here clumsily to trace. The whole thought of artificial intelligence is haunted by this autonomy of the machine or, dialectically, by its heteronomy, by its freedom or its submission. Whether one chooses to privilege one or the other, the logic will remain the same.

Artistic experience will have to teach us the interplay of influences: we cause the machine and it causes us, without it being possible to know which is the first of the human being or the machine. Yet, always the distance and the tension between them. They will not identify themselves.

One would probably learn a complex anthropotechnology where finitude is relational and influenced in such a way that it opens up to infinity and a limitless experience of what is unlimited.
