For several years, severe criticisms are carried towards the contemporary art of which the contempteurs castigate not only a rupture of with the people, but also a collusion in relation to the powers of the capitalism and finally a big aesthetic nonsense obstructing all beauty and devaluing all “the big values of the humanity”.

The origins of these criticisms are of the right as well as of the left and claim, to various degrees, a revival of populism by taking often, but not always, reactionary forms: valorization of the know-how and of the beauty understood as universal invariant.

If these criticisms adopt so regularly a resentment affectivity, it is that they suppose to face an aesthetic domination supported by a State to the edge of the bankruptcy instrumentalized by the economic domination, and that the reversal of this absurd state of affairs has something of a little annoying so much it delays to realize itself.

The contemporary art is then identified to a practice accomplice of the domination and the decadence of our civilization unable to answer the expectations of the biggest number in spite of the generosity of the public money. It would be there a real theft that an artistic oligarchy would carry out imperturbably.

In the recent context, we have seen a certain number of invocations and slogans to rally the Yellow Vests, as if they were the alpha and omega of all future politics. Or people claiming that the only acceptable art form in the current situation would be the often poetic graffiti left in the streets as a result of these protests. To continue making art “as before” would become impossible.

If I do not intend here to refute all these criticisms as they use heterogeneous arguments, I would like to underline some salient points.

Why are all these criticisms of contemporary art illegitimate and contradictory? They all presuppose that contemporary art is a homogeneous corpus and concept. But it is by taking a very small part of this art, the 1 % will be able to think some, and by generalizing this one, that they can fantasize a criticism. What is there contradictory, it is that by forgetting voluntarily or by ignorance, the situation of the biggest number of the contemporary artists, whose practices do not necessarily fall under the defended reactionary aesthetics and who are not all excluded from the devices of institutional diffusion (museum, center of art, gallery, etc), these criticisms invent the omnipotence of what they want to denounce: the one-upmanship is without limits because these critics enjoy to create themselves an immense and terrifying enemy, real Leviathan of the art against which it would be a question of resisting. By occulting the greatest number whose situation is more complex and precarious, they are elitist and not populist. They thus reverse their announced intention by occulting the sociology.

Secondly, these discourses assume that politics in art should be aligned with politics in society. The social movements would be an aesthetic model. But if it can be true in certain practices, to deny any autonomy and therefore any gap between the artistic practices and the social practices it is to create a hierarchy that nothing comes to justify if it is not a discourse of authority. It is also, by such a mimesis between the two, to relate to the art as to something instrumental that must give accounts, be useful, serve for something. It is very possible to think that certain artistic practices are political not because they reproduce identically certain social movements, but because they bring an enlightenment, a perception, a reflection towards certain cotemporary phenomena that remain unthought or little thought. This change of perspective which is a classical and minimal aesthetic formulation is by construction political and it can concern for example the media, the logistics, the modes of speech, the geology, etc. Its final word is not the social movement, which is a dynamic among many others that should not be overvalued in the name of a belief in revolutionary epiphany.

Thirdly, these discourses also suppose that the works of art are political when they are univocal and take sides. There are friends and enemies and one must choose sides. The fact that certain practices are ambiguous in the relation to the power and that this ambiguity gives to think and to feel is excluded. We thus fall into a caricatural discourse, with borders fixed in advance and whose presuppositions are never questioned. Boundaries that at best only react to what one wishes to overthrow and that reproduce its structure and logic.

It is moreover amusing to read certain artists becoming aware of the political inanity of their past practices, so much they reproduced aesthetic commonplaces (cinema of the Fifties, slogans in English pseudo-rock, wall in flames and other memes), and generalizing this personal dejection, that we can share with empathy, to make of it a common problem to all the contemporary art, signing there still a very egocentric position: “my problem it is you! In this domain, it is pleasing to see each one generalize his case and the criticism of the contemporary art often constitutes a strategy of appropriation functioning by occultation and generalization. The world of the art does not exist. There is an infinity of insularities and what connects them is an object of questioning and against. One despairs to hear finally a discourse of the irreducible multiplicities rather than to undergo these concepts so general that they are hollow.

Fourthly, these critics because they adopt the critical tone keep in a blind spot their own position, it is precisely it that allows the authority of the discourse. They prevent themselves from questioning the criticism as criticism (from which place does one carry a criticism? ) and the very paradoxical social demand addressed to the contemporary art: valued as creativity, concept coming from the management of the Sixties, devalued in the concrete practices where the artists are considered as real parasites (that they are besides rich or poor), the speeches on the contemporary art, this non-object, this concept empty of sense, this empty set, play the role of a symptom that one would not know how to criticize without being a part of the symptom itself and that it would be necessary to consider rather in a non-critical and reflexive way. Art does not exist, the unity of the concept is without extension and has only arbitrary definition.
