Artificial heritage

The industrial revolution had wiped out the past. The end of the domus and the harvest cycle for the megalopolis and the invention of bodies pushed to their limits. We didn’t know we could go that far, to the factory, the smoke, the pollution. Techniques were associated with this narrative of the future, erasing the past and traditions, making room for other gestures and other forms. We accompanied this movement or we resisted it according to the historical thread that we favored, which was also an image of identity dedicated to the transformation of a horizon or to the conservation of an origin.

With the AI, the relation between the past and the technologies enters a new epoch pursuing and intensifying the two previous stages: the digitalization (the constitution of ternary memories) and the networking of this one. It uses these two elements to feed itself and to constitute statistically its latent space. The latter is not a clean slate of the past but the statistical setting of this common heritage. This is why AI productions are structurally nostalgic: they are based on a stock of past data.

For all that, AI is not traditionalist. It is not in the logic of a repeated conservation of the origin but of a new historicity consisting in producing the new from the old, according to a generalized retromania. The past becomes a probability among others, such authors, such place at such time, a locality of the latent space. The latter contains a large number of past data (with the gaps proper to the archival constitution) and can calculate future data as well as alternative data, bringing back what has never happened yet.
If digitization had normalized, by the use of 0 and 1, the whole of the entities to make data of them, the latent space of the AI puts on the same level, in the manner of a flat ontology, the various historical times, authorizing us to revisit them, to fold them, to hybridize them, to mix them, to transform them. It is a generalized intempestivity, a counter-time as temporalization of the history.

We thus leave the way in which the industrial revolution had invented the history according to a rupture between the past considered as tradition and the future as emancipation. We use the past to constitute an anachronistic time that is never contemporary of itself. Thus, the entrance to the station of La Ciotat, repaired by all the images that separate us from 1895, looks like a Portapak video from the 70s.

It is a new historical narrative emerging from the latent space where the heritage is not only preserved in its unharmed character, but is reactivated, repaired, metamorphosed, appropriated. It is parameterized and thus enters itself, through its metastructure, into a new epoch of its own history.

This is the emergence of a new politics of history and a new relation to the archives that become “replayable”, as when one speaks of playing a musical score. Inheriting, in the context of latent space, consists in feeding a neural network of data to open a new possibility.
